General Motors Statement

Today MPP Bethlenfalvy (Pickering-Uxbridge), MPP Coe (Whitby), MPP Park (Durham), and MPP Phillips (Ajax) issued a joint statement regarding today’s announcement on the closure of the General Motors Oshawa Assembly Plant:

“Today is a very difficult day for the thousands of employees and hundreds of Ontario auto part suppliers that rely on the GM Oshawa Assembly Plant, as well as for workers and small business owners throughout Oshawa and across Durham Region. The Oshawa GM Plant is home to some of the most talented and skilled workers in the country. It is deeply unsettling that GM will no longer leverage our region’s diverse talent pool and deeply skilled workforce.”

“Our government has begun to explore options to help impacted workers, businesses and communities cope with the reverberations of this unfortunate decision by General Motors, including: authorizing Employment Ontario to deploy its Rapid Re-Employment and Training Services program, calling on the federal government to immediately extend Employment Insurance (EI) eligibility for impacted workers, and continuing to advocate that the federal government work with their U.S. counterparts to remove all tariffs so that auto parts suppliers can remain competitive.”

“Premier Ford and the entire Ontario Government stand with the people of Durham Region during this difficult time. We remain committed to restoring Ontario to be a leader in job creation. Our Government for the People will continue to work day and night to make Ontario Open for Business once again.”
